ABSTRACT
In the 1930s, Ray Ventura and his Collégiens established themselves as a model of French chanson, while the category of “stage jazz”, which they nurtured and perfected, made them a powerful school of Americanization. This article examines what it is in the music itself that feeds this paradox and makes this double entente possible.
