Professor Kuiper specializes in French language and linguistics, and has also taught courses in French history ranging from the Middle Ages to the First World War. He has taught culture courses focusing on topics like French cuisine and the history of French popular song. His current researchfocus is the use of corpus linguistics to enhance language learning, both for French, and for English as a Second Language - a program he has directed at University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee since 2017.
