As active participants in the Mexican cultural renaissance, Edward Weston, Tina Modotti and Manuel Álvarez Bravo engaged in a global discourse of modernism through transatlantic connections. Networks of migration in, out, and around these three artists show that Mexico City was a modernist center rivaling Paris and New York in the interwar period.
This video was presented at the Silver Atlantic conference at the Jeu de Paume (Paris) on October 2, 2021, in the context of the “Masterworks of Modern Photography, 1900-1940” exhibition on view at the time. This explains why the presentation focuses primarily on photographs from the Thomas Walther Collection. The conference was organized as part of the Transatlantic Cultures project. Images are used for research and scholarship under the fair use doctrine.
